0:39.5 | Well, we are going to have some fun today. Today we're going to be talking about mental health and what mental health is and whether you have it. |
0:51.5 | And I love, love, love this conversation because I think it's one of those things that people just don't talk about. |
1:03.0 | We talk about mental illness. We talk about mental health when there's mental illness. But we don't talk about mental health in like every day conversation. |
1:13.5 | And when I was doing some research for this program, what was really interesting is that the diagnosis, diagnosis, have doubled in the past few years for mental illness, for things that are not normal. |
1:33.5 | So I was thinking about that. Like how do you know when your diagnosed with a mental illness, you have to, you have to think about that in terms of, okay, it has to be when you're not mentally healthy, right. Then you have a mental illness. |
1:47.5 | So where is that line and in order to do that, don't we have to define mental health first? What does it mean to be mentally healthy? |
1:56.5 | And when you think about this for yourself, when you think about this in your own life, ask yourself that question, am I mentally healthy? |
2:06.5 | And if, when you think about that question, if the answer comes to you in a form of, well, I'm not mentally ill, so I must be mentally healthy, then our standard has become very low for mental health. |
2:22.5 | And I think that's true for health too, right. Both of our, I think, are medical models for mental health and for physical health are based on an illness model, right. |
2:34.5 | So basically if you aren't ill, then you're healthy, and if you aren't mentally ill, then you're mentally healthy. |
2:41.5 | So that standard is very low. So let's start at that standard, okay. So standard number one is you have some amount of mental health if you don't have mental illness, okay. |
2:58.5 | So what does it mean to just have that baseline of mental health? Now when you look it up, it talks about mental health being a sense of well-being. Okay, great. What does that mean? |
3:13.5 | And I'm going to offer that I think there is a huge crisis in the medical mental health. The reason why we're increasing our diagnosis is because people misinterpret what it means to be a human being and have well-being. |
3:31.5 | And I think the invention of the microchip and the internet and our exposure to Facebook and everyone else's life has created this idea that if we are healthy mentally, it means we're happy all the time. |
3:47.5 | It means we have well-being all of the time. And so many of us are pretending to have well-being all the time because we don't want to identify ourselves as having some kind of mental illness. |
4:03.5 | We want to be mentally healthy. We want to be able to state that we're happy in our lives, but so many of us aren't. And then we are upset with ourselves because we don't have more well-being. |
4:17.5 | I think this is one of the culprits that sends us in to a diagnosis that is less than mental health. |
4:27.5 | And here's what I want to offer you. And I have a checklist and I'm going to switch my video. You guys have three different videos on this thing. So it'll be easier to read in a minute. But what I want to tell you is that I think that we need to redefine what it means to be mentally healthy. |
