Summary
Open Studio season is coming up... whether you are an old hand or this is your first year showing in this way we have some ideas for promotion and things to do in advance, during and after so that you make the best of your Open House events this year.
We are also discussing inspiration boards and reminders of what makes us tick in our work - whether that's recognition of a slowly developing series, and what happens when you try to make a painting because you feel you "should".

| 0:00.0 | And then I have to have a chat with myself about, first of all, it's not a human being and |
| 0:04.5 | reviews it. |
| 0:05.5 | Second of all, who cares what they think? |
| 0:07.8 | And at the end of the year, it's back to Art Juice. This is behind-the-scenes conversations about making art and the creative life with me Alice Sheridan and me Louise Fletcher and this is episode 18 and we are going to be talking about open Studios. We had a great listener question on this, so we're going to use this as our main topic because I think there's going to be a lot to say on it. |
| 0:40.0 | And I know that it's the right time of year it's coming up. |
| 0:43.2 | Maybe for some of you your hardened open studio experts and for some of you |
| 0:49.3 | you're doing it for the first time but I think a lot of what we might say will be specific to this |
| 0:54.3 | situation and a lot of it will apply to exhibitions and shows in general so I hope this |
| 0:59.5 | is going to be a goodie. |
| 1:10.0 | First of all though, tell me about your week what's been going on for you. D da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da. I did a spreadsheet. I made a financial spreadsheet with a budget, a target for the year, my income, I split it out monthly by sale, monthly sales, monthly expenses. |
| 1:28.0 | And the funny thing is, well I was just thinking of that, while I was doing it it so the first few months a year at a loss which I expected |
| 1:36.7 | I've spent a lot of money on advertising to build up to launching a course in August so So the money that's spent on advertising |
| 1:44.4 | doesn't really pay off until July August. So the idea is to find all your |
| 1:49.4 | expenses isn't it and put them in and make sure you can reduce your tax burden at the end of the year. |
| 1:53.8 | But I was thinking, oh, this looks really bad. |
| 1:56.6 | Like the tax people who look at this are going to think I'm rubbish because look at all these losses |
| 2:01.8 | every month. So I have this temptation not to put expenses in to not make it look so bad. |
| 2:07.6 | And then I had to have a chat with myself about first of all it's not a human being and reviews it second of all who cares what they |
| 2:14.3 | think and at the end of the year it's good to be fine. I have to say that I have I've |
| 2:20.8 | done that too I've had I've had certain expenses, certainly early on that I have refused to put into my accounting |
| 2:32.4 | sheet because to me it felt like that they were things that I probably |
| 2:39.3 | would have spent money on anyway and I'm thinking about particularly I'm thinking about my coach who I pay every month who for me you know she's been a combination at an alternative to paying a therapist probably in a much kind of more holistic view and it feels like it's something that I've done for me rather than my business even though she says no no this could totally be tax deductible. This year I might |
