It's Thursday, January 9th.

Multiple crews from around Washington State are headed to Los Angeles to help fight the wildfires.

Assistant Chief Ben Peeler with the combined Clark and Cowlitz County Fire Department is helping coordinate the effort.

He says crew safety is the first priority.

When winds blow so bad, like when you first started seeing it on the news down there,

a lot of the firefighters weren't even able to engage on the fire because it wasn't safe to engage.

Peeler says the plan so far is to send 180 firefighters and 45 engines. In addition, Washington's Department of Natural Resources is sending 10 trucks and 35 firefighters.

Outgoing public lands commissioner Hillary France says she's never seen anything like the devastation in L.A. and worries it's a sign of

fires to come. This is an incredibly tragic situation and it is truly highlighting the incredible risk that we are facing in the

Western United States especially. Peeler and Franz were guests on KUOW's Soundside today. You can find

the full conversation at KUOW.org or on the KUOW app. And Seattle Humane says it's taking in more than 60 pets from shelters in the Los Angeles area

to free up shelter space during the wildfires.

The pets will arrive by plane this weekend.

It should be ready for adoption by Tuesday.

Seattle Humane is encouraging people to make adoptions now in order to make space for the California

arrivals.
