I'm Carla Marie, and today is Thursday, April 4th,

2024. The Core 4. The four headlines you need to know. A 7.4 magnitude earthquake

hit Taiwan during their morning rush hour yesterday. This was the largest earthquake to hit the island

in 25 years, killing nine people and injuring over 1,000.

As of recording this episode, dozens of workers were still stranded in rock quarries, but were considered safe.

The roads to get to them were damaged by falling rocks.

Taiwan as a whole is actually used to earthquakes and they're

probably the most prepared for them than any other city or country, but authorities thought the

earthquake was going to be mild so they didn't send out alerts. The aftershocks caused 24 landslides

and damaged roads, bridges, and tunnels.

The epicenter was on the east coast of the island, not far from the country's capital of

Taipei. The island is so small, so the earthquake was felt everywhere. A tsunami warning

was originally triggered, but later lifted.
