Summary

Our Gospel for the first Sunday of Lent covers the three "shortcuts" the Devil offered Jesus to lure him away from his central mission of the cross. The Devil chose these temptations because he knew that Jesus would not be primarily a social reformer, or a wonder-worker, or a political operator. He would be the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Knowing who Jesus is and what he is about is indispensable as we commence the Lenten season.

friends into this holy season of land. You know these past several weeks I've

0:44.6

been rereading Fulton Sheen's great masterpiece I think is best book called The

0:49.5

Life of Christ and I'm doing it as my spiritual reading while I do my

0:52.8

office and the book is as you know it's remarkable in any number ways but what's

0:58.3

most struck me upon revisiting it is the stress that Sheen consistently and

1:03.5

insistently places on the sacrifice of the cross. That was the one thing that

1:11.1

Jesus was about. He came to do and speak many things of course but the primary

1:18.7

thing he came to do was to die to give his life for the salvation of the world.

1:26.0

Again and again Sheen will say that though he taught much Jesus was not

1:33.4

primarily a teacher though he did miraculous things he was not primarily a

1:40.8

wonder worker. He was first and foremost what John the Baptist said the Lamb of

1:49.6

God who came to take away the sins of the world. It's the master idea the

1:55.8

organizing idea around which everything else revolves. Well Fulton Sheen brings

2:02.6

this idea to bear in a famous chapter called Three Short Cuts from the Cross

2:07.6

and I want to focus on it because this is our gospel for this opening Sunday of
