Summary

Our magnificent first reading is a short passage from the beginning of the twelfth chapter of the book of Genesis. We see that at this point in the creation story jealousy, rivalry, anger, murder, imperialism, arrogance, drunkenness, indeed a wickedness has spread over the entire face of the earth. So what does God do? He sends a rescue operation! The rescue operation is going to come in the form of a people trained to listen again to the voice of the Lord. During this season of Lent we must also become a people trained to listen so as to be rescued by the Resurrection.

Peace be with you. Friends, we come to this second Sunday of Lent and can I encourage

0:40.9

everybody to attend maybe a little more carefully to the readings at liturgy? Maybe when you

because there's something exceptionally powerful about the Lenten readings. It's as though

0:58.4

the church is putting us through a spring training or saying we need to get back to

1:03.4

the fundamentals and basics of the Christian life. Some of these are among the most important

1:08.8

readings in the whole Bible. Spend a little more time with them. The magnificent first

1:14.7

reading for this weekend is a short passage from the beginning of the 12th chapter of

1:21.2

the book of Genesis. Can I just say that chapter is one of the most pivotal chapters in

1:26.1

the entire Bible? I'll tell you why. But to understand, we have to look at what preceded

1:33.1

it. What came before chapter 12? Well, Genesis opens with the splendid account of God's

1:40.8

creative act. So in an act of nonviolence, in a speech act, God gives rise to the whole

1:50.8

of the universe. And he places human beings in the midst of the primal garden as stewards

1:57.6

of his creation. And he finds this ensemble very good. So we know of that opening of the

2:04.7

Bible, which is massively important. We don't live in a dualistic universe of good spiritual

2:10.0

things and bad material things. God is not wrestling some rival into submission, but
