Summary

This week Rob and Troy "Canadians are just as tough as Vikings" Goodfellow are joined by Waypoint's Ian Boudreau and Cameron Kunzelman to talk about Shiro Games' Northgard. A reasonably-paced RTS set in the time of Vikings, Northgard gives you a thoughtful, boardgame-like experience that isn't focused on APM. Northgard turns the tables on traditional RTS games by emphasizing a small number of precious units rather than throwing hordes at the player. The winters can be brutal, but Northard earns a strong recommendation from the panel.

But Cameron, I wanted to start with you because you wrote a piece for us over at

0:38.5

Waypoint last week about sort of the hard choices that North Guard is constantly forcing on you.

0:45.2

And I was hoping you could sort of, you know, start us off here by laying out what North Guard is

0:50.0

and where those decision points are coming at you from?

0:54.8

Yeah, sure.

0:59.5

So Northcard is a, golly, Viking game, we'll say.

1:00.9

We'll start from the beginning.

1:04.4

And it's like a Viking subsistence simulation game.

1:07.3

So it's tile-based.

1:08.6

They're large tiles. And in those tiles, you can build X number of buildings for some

1:12.3

tiles. It's like three, for some it's four, for some it's five. And those buildings have units

1:18.3

that are assigned to them. And so it's a game about taking tiles, building buildings, and then

1:23.9

assigning units to those buildings in a strategic way. And this all takes place on a big island, and the island has other factions on it.
