Summary

Bruce and Troy "Bury me with the HMS Niobe" Goodfellow welcome Matthew Flanagan to this week's show as they talk about 2015's Rule the Waves. Rule the Waves is a game about designing post-dreadnought battleships in the context of World War 1 great powers. Part budget manager, part ship designer, and sometimes a combat simulator, Rule the Waves is a game that has all the detail that simulation grognards expect and all the trappings that come along for the ride. Troy loves it, Bruce has his reservations, and Matthew tells us what makes the game so appealing.

Matthew, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me. So Matthew, since you're a guest,

1:04.5

we'll start with you. You've done a lot of YouTube videos about Roll the Waves. This is a game

1:09.8

you probably know better than any of us do, though I'm a huge fan of it.

1:13.9

If you were to make the elevator pitch for Rule the Waves, what is it?

1:19.7

I would say it's a early 1900s Grand Admiral.

1:24.4

Simulator might be the wrong word, but it's basically a game that puts you in the shoes of being, you know, Alfred von Terpitz or Jackie Fisher.

1:33.2

Not Jackie Stewart.

1:35.3

No.

1:36.3

So, I mean, basically the game puts you in the role as the head admiral in any of the great powers, France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, and you could even play as the Confederate States in sort of a hypothetical alternate universe, and puts you in charge of building the Navy of your dreams. It allows you to fight battles as well when you do end up going to war, and it also allows you to make certain influences on political decisions, although the actual

2:03.9

politics is a little bit more random. It's not really based on history or anything like that.
