Summary

Rowan Kaiser, Gita Jackson, and Jonathan Bolding join Troy "Why do I always have to clean the airlock" Goodfellow to talk about Rimworld. Rimworld joins a prestigious line of games in the relatively new genre of "It's like Dwarf Fortress, BUT - " by adding its own sci-fi survival twist. While still in Early Access, Rimworld has recently made its way to Steam to bring its procedurally-generated madness to the masses.

Hello, you're listening to Three Moves Ahead, and I am your host, Troy Goodfellow, back with you after a long, long hiatus.

0:08.4

I've been gone for most of the summer doing busy, busy work, but I am back now to host a show on what is kind of the latest hotness.

0:17.0

It's a game that's been around, actually, for a couple of years, but has just hit steam, so I thought it would bring together a crack panel to talk about Colonial Management Sim Rimworld.

0:27.6

With me is semi-regular panelist, freelance writer Rowan Kaiser.

0:31.6

Freelance writer John Bolding.

So Rowan, I'm going to start with you, and I'm going to ask you to explain the Rimworld to our audience,

0:48.5

people who don't know what it is or who only have a vague idea of what it is.

0:52.3

What separates it, what distinguishes it from other

0:55.0

colonial colony builder type games like banished or a dwarf fortress?

1:01.4

So, yeah, it's a game along those lines. I like to call them survival strategy games,

1:05.7

which sounds like colonies are how they're getting going and that's perfectly perfectly good genre name.

1:12.6

You take a few people and have them build a new base and survive raids and dig for silver and

1:20.7

stuff like that. The eventual goal is sort of to build a spaceship to get off the planet that

1:26.0

you crash landed on, but it's

1:29.0

fairly open in whether you're actually even trying to do that or just trying to build and

1:35.9

survive. The thing that separates Rimworld from most of the others for me is that it seems to have,

1:47.3

it seems to be very comfortable in its scope.
