Summary

This is the Old Testament Passage that most clearly shows that Jesus died in our place as a substitutionary sacrifice for us because of our sins. It shows that Christ was our sin bearer and our sin offering and that His sacrifice justifies us. It's also the passage most often ignored by those who deny Penal Substitutionary Atonement. In other words, it's important. We will look at how this passage, with the relevant background understanding of the Levitical sacrifices undeniably teaches that Jesus justifies us with a substitutionary sacrifice according to the will of God. I will cover the debate on this passage as well and even get into why the Septuagint (LXX) translation of Isaiah 53 doesn't give us good reason to reject what we read in the Hebrew text. This is part 3 in a series on Penal Substitutionary Atonement. 0:14.7

there's influential people in very influential people right now in the in the church

0:20.2

whether they're actually part of the church or not I'm not going to comment on

0:23.0

But they're denying and even demonizing demonizing central aspects of the meaning of the cross that's like there's things that the cross means

0:30.4

This is what the cross is about based upon scripture and they're not only saying that's not true they're saying it's evil

0:36.4

That's kind of a big deal and so I'm doing this series right now

0:40.2

You know getting into the idea that Jesus really did die in my place and he suffered the

0:44.2

penalty for my sins we call this penal substitutionary atonement one label to give it but

0:49.1

the idea that those elements are in the gospel they're part of the message of the cross and we need to hold to these

0:54.3

things and of course this is under attack the gospel is always under attack and we here we

0:58.0

stand as believers our job is to know the know the word know the gospel in

1:02.4

particular and to hold to it and to proclaim it.

1:06.2

So that in the face of those attacks we're the one saying, hey, here's the purity and the

1:10.4

truth of the gospel.

1:11.4

That is our job, that is our goal, and it is probably one of the most important things we do.

1:16.0

So it is under attack, but here's the things they'll say. They'll say that penal substitution, or the idea that Jesus died in my place, taking the punishment for my sin, that he suffered the punishment for my sins,

1:25.0

that this is cosmic child abuse or it turns God into a pagan deity who's out for blood.

1:30.0

I use quote marks with my fingers here because this is what they say I'm

1:33.7

hearing I'm quoting the guys who say this kind of stuff. Sadly this is where a lot of

1:37.7

the conversation is and I even hear this stuff entering into pulpits and
