You find me in a rather odd condition this morning, given that I'm not quite sure where to start in discussing the fire brigade being criticized, condemned for failings in the response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

I'll tell you where I will begin.

I'll begin by reading you a tweet from a serving firefighter, which I don't necessarily agree with or endorse, but I feel I'll share it with you.

He writes, as a firefighter who attended Grenfell,

I am truly disgusted by what this country has become.

This picture sums it up perfectly.

Man who closed 10 fire stations, cut 30 fire engines and 500 firefighters,

not to blame, but fire brigade cut to ribbons fully to blame.

The man, of course, photographed on the front of the telegraph, which elected to, I think, betray the families of the dead.

I don't think betray is too strong a word.

Or at least again, I would suggest that's a word they would be comfortable using.

And the man to whom this firefighter refers is, of course, the current Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is reported on the front of a newspaper that used to pay him a quarter of a million pounds a year for his largely fact-free propaganda is completely ignoring the fact that he was supposed to be

leaving as leading as out of the European Union on Thursday and focusing instead upon his

latest attempt to force an election that depending on which way the wind is blowing, he still

insists he doesn't or the country doesn't want. Yesterday's intervention was, of course,

that we need an election because Parliament has run its course. Parliament has been sitting

in its current form for precisely two weeks. But hey, who cares about facts anymore? Well, I do,

and I know that you do, and Rachel Venables does,

which means she's up first this morning to talk us through what appears to be,

almost unbelievably, a horrible situation rendered worse in the last 12 hours.
