In the summer of 1991, Tara Eichard was an 18-year-old new mother living in Aurora, Colorado. Her husband, Neil Eichard, was also 18. And like a lot of young couples with a new baby, Tara and Neil had been struggling. Money was tight, so Tara got a new job working at a health spot

inside a gym. Aurora is basically a suburb of Denver. It now has around 300,000 people. Back then,

it was around 223,000. It's about a 25-minute drive from Denver. Tara and Neal were having a tough time.

Tara had given birth to their daughter, Heather, three months earlier, and Tara was suffering

from postpartum depression.

Tara had been seeing a therapist to deal with some of her issues.

So she and Neal had been arguing more and more, and they were also living in fairly cramped

conditions since they had gone to stay with Neil's parents. On July 8, 1991, Tara went through

the motions of a normal day. She took baby Heather with her and went to the health spa where she had

recently gotten her job.

She went there to pick up her paycheck, which she did, and then she deposited that paycheck

in the bank. But shortly after that, Tara disappeared. Now, since she had just picked up some

money and had her daughter with her, Neal at first thought maybe Tara had gone

missing voluntarily. Maybe he thought she needed to take some time for herself to think. But eventually

Neil and his mother, Mays, got concerned and they officially reported Tara missing with Aurora

police. They hoped that they were overreacting in their fear that something bad had happened to Tara.

But unfortunately, they were right.

Because a few weeks later, a county road maintenance worker was on County Road 181

when he found a body that was later confirmed to be Tara Eichard.

She had been shot to death in the back of the head at point-blank range.

But there was no sign of her baby. Baby Heather was missing.
