After midnight.

Working the late shift at the gas station was not a bad job for a teenager, especially compared to some of the alternatives his friends had.

Most of them spent their weekends, stocking shelves, cleaning restaurant kitchens, or dragging

shopping carts across parking lots in every kind of weather. His job mostly involved sitting

in a climate-controlled booth, helping customers when they needed it, and finding ways to stay awake

after midnight. The station sat just off a stretch of highway on the edge of town, far enough from

the neighborhoods that things became surprisingly quiet once the evening rush ended. During the day,

there was a steady stream of commuters, truck drivers, and travelers stopping for fuel before

continuing on their way.

After dark, however, the place seemed to exist in its own little world.

Cars would emerge from the darkness, pull beneath the bright canopy lights, fill up, and

disappear again. Sometimes 15 or 20 minutes would pass without another vehicle in sight.

That solitude was one of the reasons he enjoyed the job.

The other reason was his uncle.

His uncle drove freight across several states, and one of his regular routes happened to bring him through town every few weeks.

There was never a predictable schedule because long-haul trucking rarely worked that way.

Deliveries ran late, weather slowed traffic and warehouse crews often took longer than expected.

But whenever his uncle found himself passing through during a shift, he would stop at the station, buy coffee,

and spend a little time catching up before heading back onto the highway.

Those visits became something he looked forward to.
