Jonathan's recent piece "Does My Son Know You?" was a rare moment of candid sharing and distilled wisdom in light of his recent cancer diagnosis. This is truly a must listen as Jonathan shares a poignant perspective on faith, family and the power of community. Be sure to stay tuned to the end where he also breaks down a potential Grizzlies-Warriors matchup in the NBA playoffs, leaving one of our hosts happy and one sad.

Hi, everyone. This is Curtis, and I am excited to tell you about a new feature of the GoodFaith podcast, and it's called Campfire Stories.

0:11.0

Now, in a great campfire, everyone has the opportunity to share their stories. And so, in Campfire Stories, we want to hear from you.

0:20.0

We want to hear a story about what you are doing along the themes of the GoodFaith podcast, perhaps it's something about how you're living out your relationships with political polarization, how you are trying to reflect the image of God in your institution and organization, or what you're doing with your money, or your vocation, anything that has been sparked by the themes that we've covered here in the GoodFaith podcast is fear game.

0:47.0

It doesn't matter if it's a big story, a small story, or something in between, as long as it's a story about what you are doing in your life.

0:55.0

We're not so much interested in hearing just thoughts. We want to hear stories of doing.

1:00.0

So, we'll put a link in the show notes where you can just click on it and then supply us the basic outlines of your story of doing, of living out the themes of GoodFaith podcast.

1:11.0

And we'll look at it and we may invite you to share that story on a GoodFaith blog, a social media, or perhaps even invite you to come on the GoodFaith show yourself and talk to me and share your story.

1:25.0

Like, how cool would that be? I'd love to hear from you. I'd love to talk with you. So, please consider joining the campfire by actually joining actively and sharing your story with others gathered around the campfire.

1:38.0

Thanks.

Welcome to the GoodFaith podcast. I'm David French with Curtis Chang and I'm really very happy about this podcast already. We barely started, but I'm already happy about this podcast.

2:00.0

We have a guest, we have a guest, Jonathan Charks from The Ringer. One of my favorite podcasts, The Ringer NBA Show. Now Curtis is going to more fully introduce Jonathan, but I just want to go ahead and say we're not going to talk about.

2:15.0

So, if you've come here to talk about faith and to hear a discussion of faith and culture, that's what we're going to talk about, but we are going to save about 10 minutes.

2:28.0

So, at the very end, we're going to save about 10 minutes for some NBA commentary. So, I'm just telling you now, and for most of you, if you've listened to me for any length of time, you're also here for NBA commentary.

2:40.0

But we're going to save the final part for some NBA commentary, but I'm really excited about our guest today. Curtis, why don't you introduce Jonathan and let's just get started.

2:51.0

Yeah. Well, I think the listeners of The Good Faith might assume that the first thing in the morning that like maybe David does when he reads is the latest Supreme Court rulings or the latest geopolitical analysis. And maybe for me, they might assume the first thing I read is the latest theological treatise or something.

3:10.0

At least for me, that's not true. The first thing I read when I'm gathering my breakfast cereal together, I turned to the ringer and I've done so ever since the ringer was launched.

3:21.0

I love the ringer because it covers what is it kind of trivial topics in terms of sports and popular culture most of the time, but it does so with such smart writing.

3:33.0

And one of the smartest writers covering the NBA beat for the ringer is Jonathan Charks. And I was last week turning to the ringer eight o'clock in the morning over my breakfast cereal.

3:46.0

And I saw a piece from him titled, do you know my son? And then when I read it, I was like, this is completely different than the type of piece I've come to expect from the ringer, but it was so good.

3:59.0

And it grabbed me really at a very visceral level. And it also connects to so many of the topics that we've talked about a good faith that I thought we just got to absolutely have Jonathan.

4:09.0

So Jonathan, welcome to the good faith podcast. It's an honor to have you. And thank you for joining us. And could you start by just kind of I know I'm not sure how many of our audience actually our ringer readers themselves.

4:24.0

But could you start by just telling the story of your piece? Do you know my son? And then we'll kind of go from there.
