If you have been following along through this podcast show's episode for a while,

you've probably heard me talk about the evil German ruler, Adolf Hitler,

who wanted to take over the world.

You've probably noticed that learning history is kind of like looking

through a huge scrapbook. Each page has pictures and details about

specific segments of a bigger story. Each time we do an episode about an event

like World War II, for example, we can get a better, clearer picture.

The Second World War began in September of 1939, when Hitler attacked Poland.

This attack was unprovoked and completely unnecessary to say the least.

Over the winter of 1939 and 1940, the world held its breath to see what would happen.

This period of time during that winter is sometimes called the phony war,

because Hitler did not make any overt moves on his wary neighbors.

However, it was during that winter that Russia, the Soviet Union at that point,

decided that it needed to create a buffer zone around its city of Leningrad.
