The Victorian sat at the end of the block like it had somehow survived by accident.

Every other house on the street had been updated beyond

recognition over the years. Vinyl siding, widened garages, modern windows. Most of them looked

interchangeable now, but the Victorian still carried traces of another time beneath all the

neglect and questionable renovations. Its narrow tower still rose above the trees.

The wraparound porch sagged slightly near the front steps, and parts of the exterior had been

covered in cheap aluminum siding sometime in the 70s. But enough of the original house remained

visible to hint at what it once looked like, tall windows, decorative trim buried beneath

layers of paint, ornate woodwork hidden under careless remodeling. Most people who toured the house

saw a money pit. They saw potential. The first time they walked through it together, she immediately

noticed how strangely disconnected parts of the interior felt.

Hallways ended awkwardly. Rooms connected in ways that didn't quite make sense. Certain walls

looked thicker than they should have been. Upstairs, especially, the layout felt uneven

somehow as though portions of the house had been shifted around over the years.

That fascinated her. Old houses changed over time. She knew that.

Families remodeled, rooms were combined, staircases moved, servants' areas disappeared completely once homes modernized.

But even during that first walkthrough,

she kept getting the strange feeling that the Victorian remembered its older shape better than its current one. Three months later, they owned it. The renovation work started almost immediately.
