On September 30th, 1884, a young man was born who would find his growing career cut short by a crime that to this day remains unsolved.

James Douglas Edgar, Doug to those who knew him, was born on September 30th, 1884 in England,

to a family who was described as not very well off. Because of this, when he was just 13 years

old, Doug began caddying at a local golf course to make some extra money.

Though he never actually played himself, one day a golfer invited the boy to try his hand at the game.

After swinging and missing seven times, Doug finally hit the ball, and the rest was history.

He fell madly in love with the sport, and though his game was described as mediocre at best,

due in large part to a hip injury, Doug's charisma and charm made him incredibly popular

amongst other players.

One day while practicing, Doug's ailing hip

began bothering him enough that he started taking these shortened swings with his upper arms

locked against his chest, basically making a back swing without turning his hips. To his

surprise, the ball sailed and landed exactly where he was aiming, going further than any other shot he had ever made.

Later calling the stance the movement, Doug had unknowingly not only improved his own golf game, but created a move that would become the cornerstone of golf instruction for the next century.
