Summary

Mike Hill joins for me for a multi-episode exploration of the masterful book “Lila: An Inquiry Into Morals” written by best-selling author Robert Pirsig. This book may be one of the most undervalued ever written, as it proposes an alternative interpretation of reality that Pirsig calls “The Metaphysics of Quality” (MOQ). According to MOQ, reality is not made up of substance, but rather it is composed of distinct patterns of value. In a Copernican-like revolution of perspective, MOQ sheds new light on age-old debates such as moral relativism, the nature of subject-object duality, good vs. evil, science vs. religion, the importance of freedom, and the primacy of action.

0:33.6

First, let's give you a little bit of background on Mike.

0:58.1

Mike is a design consultant and philosopher in the film and game industry. He's worked on a number of big projects with major clients like Netflix, Warner Brothers, Sony, NASA, JPL, HBO, Activision, Microsoft. David Fincher. I worked with Tim Miller on Deadpool, love, death, and robots, Game of Thrones, Call of Duty, Halo, and Horizon Zero Dawn.

1:07.0

So, Mike's a brilliant guy.

1:14.5

And he is the one who introduced me to this book, Lila, some time ago. And I have referred people to this book as part of a trilogy for breaking down your materialist worldview and

1:21.6

opening your eyes to the non-materialist side of reality. And the three books I've recommended together were Lila,

1:33.1

Human Action by Mises, and Maps of Meaning by Jordan Peterson.

1:37.3

I think these three books jive really well together.

1:42.5

So this book, Lila, subtitle is An Inquiry Into Morals, was written in 1991.

1:50.4

And it's exploring this complex topic called The Metaphysics of Quality.

1:57.1

And this book basically draws connections between evolution, culture, morality, and theology

2:04.7

in a very deep way.

2:06.7

And it's written by Robert Persig, who's best known for his original book, Zen and

2:13.2

the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which is written in 1974, which is one of the best-selling philosophy

2:18.9

books of all time. But interestingly enough, so few people have heard about Lila, which was

2:24.7

written a couple of decades later. And in my opinion, and I think you'll see, in Mike's

2:32.9

opinion, and for reasons we're going to lay out

2:35.1

thoroughly here, I think Lila is actually the more important work. And it does this,
