Full disclosure, I'm recording this take before Thursday night's game against the Tennessee Titans for a recap and analysis of what went down at

here is much dumber, but it's an idea I've had for years. If I was a desperate

NFL offensive coordinator, here's what I would do. A lateral-based passing system. I know it sounds stupid probably because it is but I think it

could work. What I mean is a passing game that has built in lateral options

the hook and ladder playbook on steroids, concepts and a philosophy where

players can lateral the ball after catching passes. I know the risk it comes with a

fumbling but there's also a great and hidden reward.

Imagine the defense having to defend every eligible before and after the catch.

It would take a lot of reps and practice and some trustworthy players, but we've seen these happen in small moments before.

In 2018, the Steelers used a lateral from James Washington to Jujus Misusteroster to put the Benfieldgal range until Chris Boswell slipped and missed the game tying kick.

Travis Kelsey has occasionally flipped the ball to a fellow chief and Randy Moss had a wild over his head lateral for an end-of-half touchdown decades ago.

To me this is no different than the triple option in college.

Practice it enough and you'll get pretty good at it.

Lateral's don't need to happen every play, but often and defenses will have a nightmare

preparing for it.

If I was a big-time underdog, I would try it out. That's what Miami did with a wild cat,

reinventing the single wing to knock off the Patriots. I would love to see this somewhere.
