It's one of the simplest routes in the game of football

and one of the most successful too. The slant route has been around for a long, long time.

Quite honestly, seemingly as long as the invention of the forward pass.

Yet, despite its ease and overall success in the NFL,

especially in today's game predicated on spacing,

the Pittsburgh Steelers seem unable or unwilling to call slant routes in the passing game.

According to Sports Inflow Solutions, which tracks each route concept run by pass

catchers across the league on a weekly basis. The Steelers ran just three

slants in week one against the San Francisco 49ers.

Your ears did not deceive you there either.

Three slants.

The Steelers dropped back to pass 51 times on Sunday. Just three slants were run. That's remarkable.

Deontay Johnson, Alan Robinson II, and Darnell, Washington ran the lone three slant routes in the 30 to 7 loss.

Pittsburgh is seemingly unwilling to run slant routes in Matt Canada's scheme. Yet there is a great reliance on the

curl route of all things. Again, according to SIS, the Steelers ran 51 curls on 51 dropbacks.

Instead of fourverts in Canada's vocabulary, it's four curls. You get a curl and you get a curl. Everybody gets a curl.

All right I'll see myself out now. But seriously it's painful to look at. As Alex Kizora stated in his

terrible take Wednesday, the offense remains boring overall. Granted, it's just

one week in the second year of Kenny Pickett with a seemingly
