Coming into training camp for the Pittsburgh Steelers,

the slot cornerback position was a major concern.

Gone were 98% of the snaps.

Let me say that again.

Gone were 98% of the snaps with Cameron Sutton departing in free agency and Arthur Millett later

being released in the summer due to a silly contract dispute. In came veteran

Chandon Sullivan and roster holdover Eliza Riley to battle for the spot, along with third-year safety, Trey Norwood.

With Norwood hurt throughout training camp, Sullivan and Riley have been taking advantage of the reps and have put together strong pre-seasons for the black and gold.

Sullivan and Riley both had interceptions in last Saturday's preseason game against the Buffalo Bills

and both are making a serious push not only for a 53-man roster spot in Pittsburgh

but the starting slot

cornerback spot in sub-package football. Just a few months ago, that was

seemingly unthinkable. Funny how these things tend to work themselves out though, no?

Riley is the Swiss Army knife able to play free safety, box safety, slot corner, and even

stand out on special teams.

While Sullivan is the experienced NFL vet at the slot position

with more than 2,000 career snaps there.

It might not be pretty on paper, and it certainly isn't comforting as Sutton and Millett have been in the past.

But based on performances throughout training camp and then in the preseason so far,

things are really looking up at the position.
