I'm Josh Carney. In the NFL, it's funny how quickly perceived weakness can turn into his strength. Just like that. That's what

has seemingly happened for the Pittsburgh Steelers at the outside linebacker

position. Just a month ago, depth was a massive concern for the Steelers behind Star T.J. Watt, an emerging past Russia Alex Highsmith.

On paper, that duo looked rather strong overall as a serious one-two punch

But it was a barren wasteland behind them with rookie fourth-round pick Nick Herbig and former sixth-round pick Quincy Roche slotted in as the depth

pieces behind them.

It wasn't great at all.

GM Omar Khan knew that. That's why veteran Marcus Golden and his 47 career

sacks became a member of the Steelers. Turning that weakness into a perceived strength for the black and gold ahead of the 2023 season.

Sports Illustrated's Connor or tabbed the group as the Steelers strength in a piece on Wednesday.

On Thursday, ESPN's Mike Clay also called the outside linebacker position the Steelers'

strongest unit overall. That changed quickly. While it might be hard to argue with a big

three of Watt Highsmith and Golden at the outside linebacker position as a strength at least on paper for the Steelers

it remains a bit surprising overall to see that one could argue the tight end room looks like a

strength as does the obvious quarterback situation behind Kenny Pickett with veteran Mitch Trebiski extended and Mason Rudolph shockingly resigned.

It's good that the outside linebacker situation is fixed now though and looks rather strong. Just one month ago concerns were very real that the Steelers would be entering the 20-23 season with a rookie fourth-round pick with

size concerns and a former sixth-round pick signed to a reserve futures deal in January as the options behind Watt and Highsmith.

That's obviously not the case now thanks to Golden signing a one-year deal.

And good thing too, considering the outside linebacker position, is the key cog in the engine, that is the Steelers defense.

Hopefully Watt and Highsmith are able to stay healthy this season, and Golden is able to provide valuable reps keeping both fresh.

If that happens, the Steelers could find themselves in contention overall.
