When asked about the difficulty of making final roster cuts, Chuck Null reportedly

quipped that the problem won't be cutting, it'll be stopping.

With OTAs still in progress and training camp more than a month away, there's plenty of

time for players to make their individual cases for

a place on the final 53 men roster. A new head coach Mike McCarthy is just getting to know his players.

There is certainly plenty of talent on the current Steelers roster, and some players are locks to make the final cut.

In some cases, veterans will be fighting to hold off rookies from taking their jobs. McCarthy may have some difficult choices come August.

McCarthy will certainly bring fresh eyes to this process, and players' past struggles may not matter to him as much as they would have to Mike Tomlin if he had returned.

McCarthy will likely be viewing these players for what potential he can help them achieve as much as what they bring to the field now.

But it's still his job to be critical in his analysis.

When it comes to roster cutdowns, one consideration is lost value.

Cutting a player that was drafted in a higher round is acknowledging that the team made a mistake

and wasted an opportunity to add a talented player that could have helped the team.

But holding on to a player just because he was drafted high is actually worse because it's

essentially doubling down on a bad call. It's better just to move on. The Steelers admitted as

much when they drafted Kenny Pickett in the first round and then traded him a few years later.

When the Steelers look at trimming the roster, they can't worry about either of these issues.

The only thing that matters is constructing a team that gives them the best chance to win.

That may mean letting two former third round picks go in Caleb Johnson and Roman Wilson.
