When assessing the roster for the Pittsburgh Steelers entering the offseason and trying to find ways to create more cap space,

the name of linebacker Cole Holcomb always popped up as a seemingly easy cut candidate,

allowing the Steelers to save money at a position where they have

some good depth. What was never really expected, at least for me, was a restructure for Holcomb

to keep him around. But that's exactly what happened between Holcomb and the Steelers Thursday morning,

leading to Pittsburgh keeping the veteran linebacker around as he continues to recover

from a gruesome knee injury suffered in week nine of the 2023 season. Since then, Holcomb has been

on IR and then the reserve PUP list throughout the 2024 season. He did have his practice window

opened late in the year, and GM O'Marcon stated that Holcomb

could have played if the Steelers made a run in the postseason.

That was interesting to hear from Con, but it never really felt like Holcomb had a future

in Pittsburgh, especially after the signing of Patrick Queen and free agency last offseason,

the selection of Peyton Wilson in the 2024 NFL draft,

and the presence of Elandon Roberts, who is a free agent but expects to return to Pittsburgh.

The Steelers did well, though, getting Holcomb to restructure, keeping him in Pittsburgh,

where the Steelers were getting close look at him throughout the offseason, as he continues to

try and get back to where he once was as a

player. If he's able to recover and get back to a good level of play, depth is outstanding

at inside linebacker. If he ultimately gets cut, no harm, no foul. This is a win-win for the Steelers

and Holcomb, a good bit of business to open up more cap space
