Ever since the NFL moved from 16 games to 17 games in the regular season,

starting with the 2021 season, there has been a lot of chatter about them continuing to expand to 18 regular season

games. That chatter picked up quite a bit when at the NFL draft on the Pat McAfee show,

NFL Commissioner Roger Giddell talked openly about wanting to sacrifice another

pre-season game for an 18th regular season game.

One of the most visible and notable owners in the NFL, Stephen Jones, the son of Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, recently appeared on the new

Scoop City podcast with Diana Racini and Chase Daniel, and he was asked about adding an 18th game.

As a part of the competition committee, he said they are already discussing it as quote

probably inevitable

what he said next was pretty interesting

he acknowledged that it will be a challenge and there will probably be

strategy involved when it comes to managing a 53 man roster for an 18 game regular season.

He did not outright say it, but that is because of the additional wear and tear on players' bodies.

He then went on to frame the change is probably welcomed by players saying they like the compensation in the size of their contracts lately in an 18th game will increase that more.

So it all boils down to money.

Nothing surprising there. He really kind of skated by the framing of the question which was more

angled towards player health and safety. He wrapped his answer up by saying nobody cares more about the health of the

players than the NFL and the individual owners around the league.

Those two things are incompatible to me.
