A month from now, the Steelers will open training camp. After a few transactions this week,

team still has a full 90-man roster and they seem ready to work.

And no, as if today, 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aieff does not seem likely to join them in Laitrobe by way of trade.

Which leaves one of the lingering questions of this off season.

Who is the number two wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers?

With Deontay Johnson traded to the Panthers, George Pickens is the lone obvious starter.

The wide receiver room certainly has speed, some talent, and some experience,

but no clear choice to line up opposite Pickens and draw attention from the opposing defense.

The situation seems less than ideal and based on all of the reports of the Steelers

reaching out to the 49ers, the Broncos, and maybe even the Seahawks, this probably wasn't the plan.

Regardless, it is their reality for the moment.

But maybe that isn't as dire a situation as it might seem.

Heading into his third season, Pickens is an insanely talented athlete known for impossible

catches.

His route running has improved since his rookie year.

There have been displays of immaturity and a lack of team first approach, but that seems to have been addressed last year.

It's not a sure thing, but I would put my money on picking stepping up and having a big year.

In order for that to happen, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith needs to find a way to prevent

pickins from facing double coverage every time he lines up. In a run heavy offense, which we are

expecting, his play design will be the key.

And this is where I do feel optimistic.
