I was going to use Wednesday's terrible take to talk about the hip drop ban

Then the Steelers signed Cordello Patterson that kickoff

rule dominated the conversation and I kicked that can down the road so I'll pick it back

up here. To revisit the NFL's officially banned the hip drop tackle. It will be a 15 yard penalty though even

the league admits it'll be difficult to call live and will more often be fined after the fact.

Similar to the illegal lowering of the helmet enforcement last season that led to some ridiculous check stealing.

The concern is this is a story that will repeat itself with the hip drop.

There are two easy schools of thought here that have made the media rounds.

Blast the NFL for the role accusing the game of going soft and remind you Jack Lambert was right

when he talked about putting dresses on quarterbacks.

Or you can praise the decision for the league trying to legislate out a dangerous play with a high injury risk.

I'll take a middle ground. I get the NFL one thing to ban the play and I get the

concern defenders have. What are they supposed to do? How do they tackle from behind? This is what the NFL needs to clarify.

Though they aren't here to coach, what they should and need to do is show defenders how it is supposed to change.

Show how to tackle a player directly in front of you

and to stop the player's momentum from picking up a first down

or scoring a touchdown.

I know coaches will adjust and tweak and that's their purpose. But almost as a we hear you offering,

the league should not just ban this play without offering an alternative,

communicate and inform the players how the game should be played.

That would go a long way in helping them understand what is and is not a foul and how defenses

...
