Just under two years ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers and wide receiver Deontay Johnson

reached a two-year 36 million million extension that locked up the talented receiver for the foreseeable future.

Two years later, though, that foreseeable future is coming to an end rather quickly.

Entering the 2024 season, Johnson is in the final year of his contract with the Steelers.

And quite honestly, it seems unlikely he's going to get an extension this off season.

Already making 16 million a year, Johnson hasn't quite lived up to expectations with the Steelers

after signing the extension.

In the last two years he has just 137 receptions for 1,599 yards in five touchdowns.

Those numbers aren't all that great. However, some of that can be attributed to the issues

under center the Steelers have dealt with the last two seasons. From Mitch

Trebiski to Kenny Pickett and even Mason Rudolph. Though Johnson played his best ball once Rudolph took over in week 16 last season,

it wasn't enough to garner a new contract in Pittsburgh.

That said, it also wasn't enough to lead the Steelers to potentially trade him away this

off season for draft compensation, as one beat writer recklessly speculated last week.

In an offseason in which the Steelers need to figure out

the quarterback position in a major way, trading away their most consistent

dependable receiver that also happens to be their best route runner, one that generates the most separation offensively, makes absolutely zero sense whatsoever.

It's speculation that has no standing in the off-season discussion.

Johnson isn't going anywhere ahead of the 2024 season, period.

But on the flip side, that doesn't mean he's a stealer or long-term either.
