I'm Alex Kazora. The NFL, it seems so large, so many teams, so many people from all over the country. And yet when you examine a coach's career, it feels so small.

Take New Steel's quarterback's coach Tom Arth. On paper, you might look at a guy you played quarterback at D3 John Carroll, coached there, and then became the head coach at UT Chat Nuga and Akron and wonder how he fell up into the NFL.

The answer is, John Carroll in the surrounding Cleveland suburbs is a football hotbed.

A star quarterback at John Carroll in the early 2000s, the Indianapolis Colts were one of the teams scouting

Arth. One of their scouts at the time was Tom Telesco, he would go on to become the Chargers

longtime GM. Also a scout at that time, Dave Caldwell, former Jaguars GM and current Eagles executive.

Bill Pullian, the colts then GM, did not attend John Carroll, but his two sons did, one of which Brian Pollian now serves as the school's AD.

The cult signed Arth as an undrafted for agent in 2003, cementing connections he still has today.

The connections don't stop there.

Arth went to the same high school as Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon and

former Atlanta Falcons O.C. Day Ragon, all attending St. Ignatius just outside Cleveland.

While the head coach at John Carroll, Arthur attempted to hire Gannon to his coaching staff.

When that fell through, he turned to Ragon for a recommendation.

Ragon told him to hire Brandon Staley, who went to Perry High School less than 40 miles away.

Arth did, and Staley eventually became the school's defensive coordinator. When Arth was fired from Akron in 2021, where did he land?

The Chargers, reuniting with Telesco and Staley.

Other NFL coaches and execs with ties to John Carroll, Josh McDaniel's played

wide receiver there graduating a year before Arthur arrived. A longtime patriot in

short-time Raiders GM, Dave Ziegler, attended school there, as did former Houston Texans GM Nick Cassario.

In fact, Arthur was the quarterback who replaced Cassario after he graduated.
