I'm Josh Carney. It took a few days longer than expected but the bats signal went up

for Pittsburgh Steelers team president and owner Art Rooney 2 Monday afternoon.

In his session with the media, Rooney made some rather pointed comments.

One that stuck out the most for me though had to do with the offensive

coordinator search. Rooney, who stated emphatically that it is Mike Tomlin's

higher and his hire alone, added that the Steelers were looking for someone with experience and one that could work with the pieces the Steelers are already had in place.

At the time, that sure sounded quite a bit like Arthur Smith.

Turns out, it was, as reports indicate that the Steelers expect to hire Smith for

the offensive coordinator job just a few days after interviewing him.

Now granted while it might not be the sexiest move for the franchise, it just might be the

best one based on the pieces that Pittsburgh has in place on the offensive side of the football.

Though Smith had some issues with his scheme in Atlanta the last two seasons,

he was outstanding as a coordinator with the Tennessee Titans in 2019 and 2020, leading the Titans to their highest scoring offense in franchise history.

He saw quarterback Ryan Tanghill develop into one of the most efficient

quarterbacks in the league in those two seasons and helped running back

Derek Henry put up back-to-back MVP caliber seasons, including the 2020 season when Henry rushed for more than 2,000 yards.

The Titans offense was explosive under Smith then and really utilized Tana Hill's

athleticism in the passing game.

They rolled him out, moved the pocket, utilized play action, and more.

Guess what?

Kenny Pickett has a similar athletic background to Tana Hill as well. So there is a bit of a fit.
