Mike Tomlin's Thursday press conference was not earth-shattering but more enlightening than I expected.

Much of it focused on the Steelers 2024 quarterback outlook and rightfully so.

While Tomlin left options on the table, here's my read of what he and the front office are planning.

They want to re-sign Mason Rudolph and have him compete with Kenny Pickett in training camp for the

week one starting job.

Tomlin confirmed Pickett is presently the starter but there will be competition.

Not could be, not might be, there will be competition.

He will be challenged, he will be pushed. And

Tomlin expressed a desire to resign Mason Woodoff a pending free agent. No

guarantee, but if he's given a fair shake at the job and money to match opportunity he probably

comes back. No hydropic, no veteran like Kirk cousins or Justin Fields, these are

the two, Pickett and Rudolph.

Of course, they'll bring two other arms to camp, but they're not going to factor into the

starting equation.

Is this the right move in direction?

Time will tell.

They want Pickett to work, the franchise needs

him to work, but two years in, and it has not gone as they hope. Rudolph impressed them, there's

no doubt about that. And Tomlin's idea of competition bringing

the best out in everyone is something he always pounds the table for. Consider
