Don't look now, but Pittsburgh Steelers rookie cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

is developing into quite the shutdown

cornerback for the black and gold. Though the Steelers slow played him early in the

season, rarely putting him on the field, much to the chagrin of many, including myself, that decision by Pittsburgh

looks like the right one so far. As Porter has hit the ground running since being

inserted into the lineup full time in week 8.

Since that date against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Porter has taken on the top

match-ups weekly against the opponent's best receivers.

Outside of some struggles here and there against Cleveland's and Mari Cooper in week 11,

Porter has more than held his own.

He's kept the likes of Jamar Chase, De André Hopkins, and even Christian Watson in check.

And he's gaining more and more trust and respect from not only Steelers coaches and

teammates, but players and coaches around the league too. As well as the national media, Porter's

getting a lot of love recently. He still remains a bit handsy at times in coverage, but you take that right now at this stage in his career,

considering how good he's been in coverage. It's not just an eye test thing with Porter in coverage either.

According to Pro Football Focus, Porter has allowed just 14 receptions on 34 targets

for 2006 yards and just one touchdown. He has one interception on the season and six pass

breakups to date as well. Among qualified defensive backs on the season, Porter has the second lowest reception

rate allowed at 41.2%.

That trails only Miami's Jaylon Ramsey. Of course it's worth noting Ramsey has played 200
