Summary

**this is a remastered and expanded version of a series released in 2016** Sydney, Nova Scotia, 1992 When 18 year old McDonald's employee Derek Wood finished his shift, he lingered for a time in the closed restaurant before exiting. Unknown to the staff remaining to complete their nightly tasks, Derek had propped open a basement door and in a matter of moments he would return with two friends armed with knives, a shovel, and a gun. The resulting robbery gone wrong will lead to a mass murder and an entire community struggling to understand how this could happen and who was responsible. During this series, the story will be told by Phonse Jessome who led the local reporting at the time of the crime and wrote the bestselling book on the case, 'Murder at McDonald's'. In this episode, we cover the trials and the stories that followed them. 1:18.6	When we jump back into the story, we'll pick up from the point the trio has made their confessions. Now with the three having confessed and been arrested we're now getting into the
1:39.2	trial can you can you just describe what you recall from the three trials? I believe they were all
1:43.2	all trials were done several. Yep. Um, Derek was up first and it was like no
1:50.1	trial I had ever covered and I covered easily a dozen murder trials in that courthouse by then, thank God, because my relationship with the sheriff's office was such that they knew they could trust me.

2:04.8	had good reputation with the sheriff's good working relationship. So they worked
2:10.1	with us despite the heightened security that had been put in place because on the day of the arrest and the first court appearance of these three guys almost a year earlier because it took a year for the first case to get to trial.
2:24.0	There were hundreds of people outside the courthouse yelling and cursing and condemning them and
2:30.0	so security was a serious concern.
2:33.0	Threats had been made that they were going to be shot,
2:35.0	they were never going to get to trial.
