Welcome to Political Thinking. It has been a good week, not for one, but for two political leaders.

Boris Johnson, an Angela Reiner.

She's proved that old rule of politics, that a real party leader is only as strong as their ability

to win over the voters, or to motivate their own party.

When Keir Starmer found that he could not move Reiner to the job he wanted,

he could not get the backing to do so on top of losing the support at the ballot box.

We knew that it was a good week for her and a bad week for him.

Well, what I heard on the doorstep is, isn't it? No, what Keir Starmer stood for?

So that's what I think our challenge is actually.

It's not, you know, people brief in saying we think Keir thinks this, we think Keir thinks that,

but actually about, well, what are we doing?

Keir Starmer finds himself in the agonising position of finding that he's being told by the parties left,

including Len McCluskey, who was on this podcast last week, that the only way to success

is to go back to the pledges he made to get elected leader, to go back in other words,

to Labour's losing manifesto of 2019.

Simultaneously, he's been told by the parties right, that the only route to success

is to rip that all up and to start again. No wonder Boris Johnson is smiling.

Smiling too, because this is a week in which he unveiled a Queen's speech, a list of government

legislation, which even those generous to the Prime Minister would say looked painfully thin.

A series of vote-winning measures, but no room for crucial things, like the reform of social care.

One thing it did have in it was an online safety bill, but it is a bill that doesn't go as far
