The race is on, and in this special tribute episode of the Race F1 podcast, we'll discuss the life and legacy of a true one of a kind, Sir Frank Williams, who has passed away at the age of 79.

I'm Ed's draw, and joining me to try and do some justice to this

great man are David Tremaine and Glenn Freeman. And I have to say, I'm delighted to have David Tremaine

joining us. It's a shame it's in such a sad set of circumstances. For the few of you don't know,

David's a long-standing Formula One journalist, author of some fantastic motorsport books as well, including Yock and Rint, Uncrowned King of F1 and The Lost Generation, which are two of my favourites.

And of course, also writes for Grand Prix Plus, the e-magazine, which I can thoroughly recommend.

And what's more, of course, David, also knew Frank Williams very well.

So, hello, David, and dare I challenge you

immediately to remember the first time you encountered Frank Williams in person? Is that etched in your

mind, or is it lost in the midst of time? Funnily enough, it is etched. Hello, by the way.

Yeah, it is etched because it was at a Formula 3 race at Throxton in, I'm pretty sure, it was 1983.

So there we all are thinking of ourselves being reasonably sized fishes in a reasonably sized pond.

And then the word goes around, Williams is coming and we're all like

little schoolboys standing to attention making sure our blazes are done up just in case we bump into

this great man and even then he'd only been winning for like four years say only but when you look at

what he went on to achieve, even then we were all

sort of well aware that it was like a papal visit. And of course, Frank was his super fit

running self and everything else. He reminded me of Anthony Valentine. Do you remember the actor?

He used to be in Callan and movies like that.

To super fit, everything about him was this like a bundle of energy had suddenly arrived.

And he would talk to anyone and everyone. That was the thing that impressed me. It wasn't like he was sort of a loo for anything else. He was just another guy who loved racing who turned up to see

if Sena was going to win again. Yeah, that enthusiasm was very much a calling card, wasn't it?
