Summary

Bring Back V10s returns for series five, and for the first time we are dipping into 1998.

Gary Anderson and Edd Straw join host Glenn Freeman to discuss all the major storylines going on in F1 in the summer of 1998, and the bizarre set of circumstances that led to Michael Schumacher coming into the pits at the end of the final lap to serve a penalty - which he only took after he'd crossed the timing line to complete the race.

We also discuss tension behind the scenes at McLaren, why Williams was struggling in its first year without works Renault engines or an Adrian Newey-designed car, a team orders row at Sauber, and how Jordan kickstarted its season with Ralf Schumacher scoring its first point of the year from the back of the grid.

We're starting a fifth series of Bring Back V10s by putting something right.

0:10.0

On looking back over our first four series, we realised we were yet to talk about anything from 1998.

0:16.0

There's no particular reason for that. I can assure you there's no bitterness towards that season,

0:20.0

just because Jack Vilner's title defence didn't go very well. It was just a quirk, really,

0:24.5

of the haphazard way we plan our episodes. So as appealing as it was to open our 1998 account

0:30.9

with that year's Belgian Grand Prix, which we will definitely do at some point in the future,

0:35.4

we went for another race from that year that was also

0:38.2

wet and featured plenty of drama, the British Grand Prix. I'm Glenn Freeman and joining me to

0:44.1

kick off Series 5 with the race that Michael Schumack has somehow managed to win in the pit lane,

0:48.8

or Ed Schroar and Gary Anderson. Ed, welcome back for another series. I'm sure the listeners will

0:53.8

hear plenty from you

0:54.8

over the next 12 episodes. You know the drill with the opening question. So when you think back to

0:59.9

the 1998 British Grand Prix, what's the first thing that comes to mind? Yeah, well, I was at Silverstone

1:05.1

that weekend as a fan. That was a few years before I started my journalistic career. I was watching

1:09.6

in the Beckett's grandstand,

1:11.1

as well as being somewhat damp. I remember at the time being completely baffled and outraged

1:15.5

by Michael Schumacher and Ferrari winning the race in the pits while serving the infamous penalty,

1:20.3

which at the time I thought was completely wrong. But as time has passed and I've understood

1:24.1

a little more of what actually happened, it's fair to say my position has changed somewhat for reasons. I think we'll get on to later, I imagine. But you were at Silverstone, might you guys? Yeah, I was there. I was sat at club, also pretty wet. But actually, delighted to see a wet F1 race. I've been to Silverstone a few times by then. It's great to see the cars running in the dry, but there's something about F1 cars running in the rain, things like the rooster tails, the spray hanging in the air, all that sort of thing. As an enthusiastic teenager, I wanted to see all of that. And it was well worth the price of getting soaking wet. And I think I might have even left the trainers I was wearing that day.

2:01.8

I think I left them in a bin on the campsites.

2:03.8

It wasn't worth taking them back after a weekend of traipsing around Silverstone.

2:08.2

Gary, good to have you with us again.
