Summary

It's mourning in Atlanta. To get the lowdown on the scene in the ATL after New England's epic Super Bowl comeback victory, we speak to Atlanta and NBA television's own Sekou Smith. We also speak to Sekou about why it is NBA players have been by far the most outspoken athletes of the Trump era. I also have some "choice words" about the political energy thrumming beneath the Super Bowl and a Just Stand Up award for the one Patriots player not going to gently to Trump's White House. We are taking a short hiatus. Please stay frosty and The Edge of Sports podcast will be back before you know it. In the meantime, please subscribe to the pod, please tell a friend, and please listen to our back catalog of interviews that captures this era of the political athlete.Sekou Smith:http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/tag/sekou-smithhttps://twitter.com/SekouSmithNBAZirin,  Political Fervor Thrums Beneath the Super Bowl’s Surfacehttps://www.thenation.com/article/political-fervor-thrums-beneath-the-super-bowls-surface—http://www.edgeofsportspodcast.com/ | http://twitter.com/edgeofsports | http://fb.com/edgeofsportspod | email us: edgeofsports@slate.com | Edge of Sports hotline: 401-426-3343 (EDGE)—Music: Game Over - Lil Flip | Sittin' Sidewayz - Paul Wall | Still Tippin' - Mike Jones Feat. Welcome to the Edge of Sports podcast. I'm Dave Ziron.

0:05.8

This is our Super Bowl show this week, and so I am talking to Atlanta's own Seikusmith from

0:11.9

NBA.com so we could talk about the Super Bowl that was and the only sport that matters now,

0:17.3

the NBA. And why NBA players, unlike NFL, NHL or Major League Baseball players, have been

0:23.7

speaking out in unprecedented numbers against the agenda of Donald Trump. Also, I've got some

0:29.1

choice words about the political energy thrumming underneath the Super Bowl and a just stand-up

0:34.3

award for my favorite New England Patriot. Yes, I have one.

0:38.6

But first, let's talk to the man himself from Atlanta, Sekew Smith.

0:44.2

First and foremost, when I think of people I know in the word Atlanta,

0:48.6

you're the first person that comes to mind, other than, of course, you know, Jimmy Carter.

0:55.9

And so I wanted to ask you, just straight up, man, Super Bowl reaction, how you doing, how you feeling?

1:02.4

I'm actually great. Even being a longtime resident of this city, I've adopted the understanding

1:08.1

that, you know, the sky usually is falling during an Atlanta

1:12.1

sporting event when, you know, it looks like the sky has fallen.

1:16.2

So my heart went out to all my Falcons fan friends during the game last night because

1:22.9

I'm a Michigan guy.

1:23.8

I grew up watching Tom Brady lead Michigan to come back when he was in college.

1:28.6

So I kind of had a feeling what was coming. And I'm prone to yell out the words touchdown Tommy

1:34.1

when he throws touchdown. So my wife was trying to kick me out of the house last night.

1:38.4

She was not at all pleased with it. She even blasted me on Facebook, which is kind of weird. You know, you're downstairs

1:45.7

yelling at the TV and your wife is upstairs telling everybody on Facebook how sick of hearing

1:50.2

you say touchdown Tommy all over the house. So it was an interesting night in a very gloomy morning,
