Welcome to the Edge of Sports podcast. I'm Dave Ziron. This week's show is dedicated to Muhammad Ali,

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Ibthahj Muhammad, Zinidin Zadhan, and every Muslim athlete out there, whether born in the United States or abroad.

There is an attack going on, and it's real.

And we would do well to remember the people we have cheered for on the field of play,

and the fact that the collective punishment represented by Trump's Muslim ban is racism pure and simple. We would do well to

remember the rising number of hate crimes as cataloged by the Southern Poverty Law Center

and the attack on the mosque in Quebec City that's left six people dead. And we would do well to

remember that this is a time in sports where people better figure out what side of history they want to be on.

And that gets to the first part of this show.

On Friday, I jumped into the snake pit with a couple of proud bigot sports radio hosts on Boston's WEEI.

Their names are Kirk and Callahan.

They were enraged about a column that I wrote about Tom Brady's friendship with Donald Trump,

and I went on their show to discuss it with them, and that was a mistake, because there's no

dialogue to be had with people who think that Muslims lie about the attacks they face and that

the wall on the border is just a peachy-keen idea.

I also did not know before agreeing to go on that they had been suspended for sexist and racist vitriol in the past.

If I had, I wouldn't have done it.

Lesson learned.
