I had a Twitter exchange this week.

After the Brexit triumph emerged from the Brexit crisis,

it was with Rupert Harrison,

the man who used to be George Osborne's economic brain in the Treasury,

the man who did the real policy crunching.

He was rather smuggling, pointing out

that even after the DUP had seemed to bring the Brexit talks to an end,

he tweeted that people have short memories of what difficult negotiations are like.

Lots of commentary pointed out that the government might fall that no deal is imminent.

Calm down people.

I replied at the end of the week,

we'll never make a journalist of you Rupert.

You have to have the disastrous crisis in order to have the surprise breakthrough.

That's what reporting's all about.

There was no deal agreed in Brussels today to move on to the next phase of the Brexit talks,

despite all the expectation that agreement was on the cards.

The Prime Minister has believed to have broken off from talks with the President of the European Commission

after an intervention by the Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland.

They are, of course, Mrs May's parliamentary partners at Westminster.
