| 0:48.6 | First of all, could you tell us about your career in the police? |
| 0:52.2 | Well, yeah, actually, I actually became a police officer by accident. |
| 0:55.6 | I really never had any intention growing up or anything to be a police officer. |
| 0:59.7 | I was in the military during the Vietnam War, and after I was discharged, I got home, |
| 1:05.6 | I was just looking for a job. |
| 1:07.2 | Well, my brother was a police officer, the United States Police Department. |
| 1:10.6 | And, of course, this is during, I got out in 1968, and the war was still, I did my four years, but the war was still going on. So there weren't a whole lot of young men available to serve in the police department. So they were really looking for people. My brother suggested, well, come on down. They're hiring. And I needed a job, and I just went down and stayed there for 38 years. |
| 1:29.5 | It was just one of those things I just fell into and it turned out to be a great because the only thing I'd ever really want to be in my life was a writer. I never wanted to be anything else. It's my earliest memories. All I ever wanted to be as a writer. but being in police work |

| 1:46.6 | but also gave me a lot of things to write about. And I've got 18 books in print and I'm all about police work. So it gives me really a good basis to work from. Yeah, it sounds like you get tons of material from the job where you're working a homicide. |

| 2:04.7 | I was in charge of homicide for a number of years. |
