at 88 years old. She was the first African American woman to win the No Bell Prize for

literature. She influenced countless writers and readers around the world. She was a master

of words and had a profound impact on me. I was proud to choose four of her novels for

my book club and interviewed her on the Oprah Show many times. We have an encore presentation

of our interview about her very first book, The Bluest Eye. It was after the show that

I heard from women around the world who told me how colorism, just like that depicted

in the Bluest Eye, impacted them, people of color, and many different cultures. It was
