On March 9, 1963, two officers pulled over a vehicle that,

unbeknownst to them, contained two very dangerous offenders, offenders who, after that night,

would forever be known as the Onion Field Killers. So if you like your coffee hot but your

bones chilled, sit back and start

your day with a morning cup of murder. Today's story involves two players, Jimmy Lee Smith, born

January 30th, 1931, and Gregory Ulaas Powell, born August 2nd, 1933.

First, let's talk about Jimmy.

Born in Texas to a single mother who abandoned him,

Jimmy was raised by his maternal great-aunt,

who later found herself disabled after accidentally shooting herself in the leg,

or his maternal grandmother.

After allegedly suffering from abuse at the hands of a stepfather, Jimmy ran away from home

and made his way to Los Angeles, where he spent time in juvie for burglary.

By the age of 20, he was a father of two children, neither of whom he supported, and was arrested for burglary in

1950 and again for narcotics possession. In 1952, he ended up in San Quentin State Prison,

for yet another burglary charge, was released but quickly violated his parole. In 1959, he was arrested for narcotics, again, under the name James Youngblood, and was paroled in February of 1963.
