Herman Tarnower was born on March 18, 1910 in Brooklyn, to Jewish immigrant parents, Harry and Dora Tarnower.

After attending Syracuse University and obtaining his medical degree in 1933,

Herman, now Dr. Tarnower, became a physician who specialized

in cardiology and eventually opened up his own practice in the Scarsdale and White Plains

area of New York. Then, when World War II began in 1939, Herman dropped everything and joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps, where he was promoted to major.

When the war finally came to a close, Dr. Tarnower returned to New York, began the Scarsdale Medical Center, and, from 1975 until 1980, worked as a clinical professor of medicine at the New York Medical
