Summary

This story chronicles the most powerful and destructive earthquake to ever hit the U.S. mainland, and it was only one of many that hit the settlement of New Madrid Missouri and surrounding towns. Of the top twent earthquakes to hit the U.S. mainland and Alaska, three nit the New Madrid region within a few months, destroying entire towns, causing geysers to spew sulphur smoke throughout the region, and leaving many homeless. The Mississippi River was forced to run backwards for 2 hours because of the upheaval of the earth along the fault line. Eyewitness accounts describe the devastation and panic that ensued.
