Beginning in late 1968, a serial killer began terrorizing the San Francisco Bay Area.

He called himself the Zodiac.

In addition to killing people, he carried on an extensive correspondence with various newspapers and individuals.

He sent taunting letters and cards that dared the police to catch him.

He issued threats that terrified the community.

And he sent cryptograms

that, when decoded, described a bizarre set of beliefs. This all made the Zodiac arguably

the most famous solo serial killer in American history. And what's the overall structure

for the series we'll be doing on the Zodiac. Today, we'll be looking primarily at the canonical crimes,

and then next week we'll look more at his literary career. Eventually, we'll come back and do a third

episode on Zodiac's undiscovered early career. Then finally, we'll do a fourth part where we look

at the suspects for who Zodiac may have been and see what we can conclude about him.
