I've covered a fair number of cases that are more than 30 years old.

But this may be the oldest open and unsolved case I've shared on the podcast.

The victim was only 15 years old, which means that his killer or killers, if they are

still alive, are between 60 and 70 years of age.

Today's episode is about a boy, a 15-year-old, who missed out on so much because of the cruel

violence of others.

In a summer cottage on the edge of Lake Michigan, Dr. Atecar Machack is contemplating the end

of summer, the end of vacation, and a return to his home.

Dr. Machack is a fascinating man, born in Prague, where he attended university, but his work

was interrupted by World War II.

He fought for the British during the war, becoming a member of the Royal Air Force.

After the war he married his wife, Marita, and the two moved to New York City where he

completed his training to become a doctor.

Eventually, the couple settled in St. Louis, Missouri, and started a family.

In 1973, Dr. Machack is summering in Frankfurt, Michigan with his wife and children.

Over a cup of coffee he's looking out the window, taking in a view of the magnificent lake.

But something near the water catches his eye.

It appears there is a body at the foot of the bluff.

Machack studies the body for a moment, thinking it's a sunmaither or someone sleeping.

It's then that he realizes the body is laying too still to be alive.

And for the phone he calls the Benzie County Sheriff's Department.
