0:00.0	The National Cherry Festival is a week-long event that, in 2019, will take place June 29
0:23.7	July 6th in Traverse City, Michigan. Traverse City is located in Northwest, Michigan,
0:30.8	at the base of the Lelandau Peninsula. For reference, Traverse City isn't anywhere close to Detroit.

0:48.4	The National Cherry Festival began back in 1925. This part of Michigan is one of the world's
0:57.1	largest suppliers of cherries which thrive in the Northwestern Michigan climate. At least,
1:02.9	they do during the summer months. The Cherry Festival attracts more than half a million visitors
1:08.4	to the area, which balloons the population by a significant margin. The entirety of the Traverse
1:15.3	City area has a population of less than 150,000, so the population closes in on half a million
1:22.4	people during the week of the festival. It also happens that the National Cherry Festival tends to
1:29.0	overlap with the Fourth of July holiday. This is one of the biggest travel weeks of the year in
1:34.6	Michigan, as many of the larger auto makers shut down the first two weeks of July for retooling,
1:40.5	giving line workers and others in the business one or two weeks off from work.
1:46.2	For decades, the National Cherry Festival is what Traverse City is best known for.
1:51.4	It's what originally put Traverse City on the map, and attracted young couples looking for a place
1:57.0	to raise a family, as well as luring retirees to the area, with its beauty, beaches,
2:03.6	wineries, and many golf courses. However, over the past few years, there has been a dark topic of
2:11.3	discussion undercutting the festival every July. Residents of Traverse City were shocked when one of
2:17.0	their own was killed at the tail end of the 2013 festival. Just hours after Fourth of July events
2:23.2	lit up the skyline. This incident, which occurred in the middle of Traverse City, left the community
