Today's walk is different on so many levels.

First off, it is not happening early, early in the morning, which is when I tend to walk before the sun even comes up.

It is mid-morning.

Secondly, I am not walking outside. You can probably already tell that because of the echo effect, I'm inside. I'm actually in my garage. And third, I'm not moving.

I mean, my feet are moving. My legs are moving, but I am walking in place. This is not my favorite way to walk,

but there are some benefits, which I'm going to get to in just a moment. In 2013, January

2013, got my first Fitbit, told the story. It was my employer who offered every

employee a free Fitbit and then set up a monthly competition as some added motivation to move

more and sit less. Not everybody took the Fit bit and even those who did, not everybody participated

in the monthly competitions. But that really, for me, was a huge motivator. So not only the

self-competition, setting goals, see if I can achieve those goals, beat those goals,

then setting higher-step goals, but there was also the aspect of competing with others.

And it was a friendly competition, even though there were real prizes at the end of each month.

It was still friendly.

And we had a leaderboard so that at any moment, you could check that leaderboard and see who was where.

And there was one person in particular that for months, we were really close together in terms of how many steps we would get each month.

And she was always upping her game, and it was challenging me. And there was one day I said,

so how do you get all these steps? What are you doing? And she said, well, every night when my family is watching TV,

I go behind the sofa and I walk in place.

She'd watch entire TV shows walking in place.
