Hi, I'm Edward Sree, and welcome to all things Catholic where real faith meets real life.

0:07.9

Do you ever struggle paying attention to those readings at Mass?

0:17.7

You know, we sit down and there's these readings from the Bible from a long time ago, and

0:22.2

your mind wanders, you're thinking about problems at work, you're thinking about what's

0:25.7

going to be for brunch today or the football game in the afternoon, and you know, you should

0:30.0

be really focused on the sacred readings, but you get done with them, you're like, oh, what

0:34.8

were they? What was the gospel about? And you feel bad about that? Well, I want to help us.

0:40.4

I want to help us to enter into the liturgy of the word. I want to get practical and talk to

0:44.0

0:48.2

But I also want to, I want to set a context. I want us to understand what this is all about.

0:53.3

1:13.6

It's a personal word. The analogy I like to think about is what the Israelites experience when

1:18.4

they got to Mount Sinai when God came to speak to the people in the Exodus story. They had just

1:25.0

escaped from Egypt. They go to Mount Sinai and they get the 10 commandments. But did you know

1:31.4

that those 10 commandments before they were ever written down on those tablets of stone?

1:38.1

They were spoken to the people. Did you know that? That's a little detail. Many people don't

1:42.5

realize that if you read Exodus 20, it's very clear that that God spoke the 10 commandments to the

1:49.1

Israelites. He spoke them. And what's fascinating is the language that was used when he spoke those

1:56.8

famous Tao Shaunats. When God said Tao Shauna kill Tao Shauna steel. He wasn't saying you all

2:04.7

Shauna kill you all Shauna steel. It wasn't the second person plural to use grammar terms here.
