Summary

The brothers welcome University of Chicago Professor John Mearsheimer to the show to discuss the power of the Israel lobby in the US, the relationship between the US and the Israeli state (and whether the dog wags the tail or the other way around), the possibility of change in US policy on Palestine and the Arab world, recent developments in Palestine, Lebanon and Syria, and, finally, how transformations taking place in the United States may eventually overwhelm the lobby and its ability to manipulate decision-making from US college campuses to the White House.

If you look down into the public and what the public is thinking about Israel's behavior

0:07.0

since October 7th, there's no question that support for Israel and support for its policies

0:13.0

in Gaza has withered away among a large chunk of the population.

The Israelis, as I said before, are in trouble when it comes to controlling

0:22.4

the public discourse. And this is having an effect on how lots of people think about Israel's

0:28.5

behavior in genocide. I've seen some polls that show that over 50% of Americans think Israel

0:34.8

is executing a genocide in Gaza. So there's no doubt that that's what's

0:39.6

happening down below. But there's a real disconnect between what's happening below and American

0:45.6

policy. And as I said before, the lobby has been deadly effective at keeping a policy of

0:53.8

unconditional support for Israel intact.

0:57.3

And the $64,000 question moving forward is whether or not those changes that are taking

1:03.7

place in the body politic will eventually lead to changes in policy.

1:09.6

And the lobby fully understands this problem, and they're

1:13.2

working overtime to sort of recapture the discourse, and at the same time doing everything

1:19.3

they can to insulate the policy level from the discourse level.

1:26.9

Hello, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of the Maghesey Street podcast.

1:30.4

We're thrilled to have with us the Distinguished Professor of International Relations,

1:35.3

1:38.0

1:48.0
